Whether you’re a US citizen or a visitor to America, a US road trip represents something of a dream vacation for huge numbers of people all over the world. Of course when you add up the cost of transport, accommodation, fuel, food and activities, they can seem like a dauntingly expensive trip for most of us.

However, working to a budget doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t enjoy some of the beautiful landscapes America has to offer, and in this post we’ll look at 5 amazing road trips you can take on a budget.

  1. Horseshoe Bend, Arizona

Many road trips will already be taking in the Grand Canyon, so if that’s on your itinerary then you should consider adding the beautiful Horseshoe Bend to your trip. Located in Paige, Arizona, it’s not a huge drive from the Grand Canyon and the scenery on the way there will take your breath away. The landscapes are absolutely stunning, and there’s no entry fee whatsoever, meaning it’s only really the cost of fuel that you’ll need to consider.

  1. Blanca Lake, Washington

This absolutely stunning location features a 12-mile round trip hike that will leave you breathless (and not just from the walking!). The views are nothing short of spectacular and it’s completely free to visit, so if you’re anywhere near Washington this is a must-add location to your itinerary. The lake is surrounded by incredible mountain views and some of the most scenic nature spots you’ll find in the Pacific Northwest. Be sure to pack your sunglasses however, as the glare from the water (and often snow) can get a little much if you’re there for a long period. We’d recommend opting for lenses with 100% UV protection too, which you can get regardless of whether you’re working with luxury Tom Ford sunglasses or cheap Walmart-bought frames.

  1. Upper Mesa Falls, Idaho

Many US road trips will be taking in Yellowstone, so there’s a fair chance that Idaho will be on your way anyway. If that’s the case, be sure to stop off at Upper Mesa Falls, which is completely free to visit and features utterly beautiful waterfalls, fantastic hiking trails and wonderful scenic views.

  1. Tioga Pass, Northern California

Sticking with our theme of adding to classic road trip journeys, Tioga Pass is en route to Yosemite, so it’s likely that you’ll be able to take in this beautiful location without adding many extra miles to your journey. Completely free, this beautiful mountain-filled location is full of amazing photo opportunities, breathtaking views and beautiful driving roads. A must-visit if it’s anywhere close to your road trip plans.

  1. Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, Wisconsin

Our final location is a beautiful island in the wonderful state of Wisconsin. As it’s an island you’ll need to factor in the cost of getting there, but there are many transportation options, including kayaking to the island for those who want to add a little more activity and adventure to their trip. The caves located on the island are absolutely stunning, and the sunsets are some of the most beautiful you’ll see in all of America. If you’re anywhere near Wisconsin, we highly recommend making a beeline for these wonderful islands.
